Chingona Shoutout: Stephanie Sorady

Mental Health.

At Queen de mi Corazón we praise, celebrate, and love Chingonas every day, but Fridays are dedicated to shining a spotlight on Latinas rocking it here in the US.

Meet Stephanie Sorady; she is a writer, social worker and multi-passionate mental health advocate born and raised in Los Angeles. Stephanie’s mother immigrated from Mexico, and she proudly incorporates her multicultural background into her work and is a bilingual clinician.

She loves nothing more than guiding others to realize their strengths and create healthy lives they love. Stephanie received her Bachelor’s in Social Sciences with an emphasis in Psychology from the University of Southern California and her Master’s in Social Work from Columbia University.

Stephanie just completed her first mental health poetry collection "Kiss From God" which will be coming out this summer 2021. You can stay up to date on her book's release and enjoy mental health content on her instagram: @stephaniesorady_msw

We had the opportunity to talk with her recently and asked her a couple of real questions to get to know her a little better

Where are you from?

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California!

My mom is from Michoacan Mexico and my dad is from New York - they met at a Taco Bell in L.A.

What's your favorite taco of all time?

The tacos my mama makes are genuinely the best. Currently I'm a vegetarian so I love tacos dorados de frijoles (con mucho chile!)

What's your go-to emoji? 🤠 (he’s just so happy!)

To someone who has never been to Mexico, what place would you recommend they visit for the first time?

One of the things I love the most about Mexico is how much there is to see and how diverse our culture is. But this makes it hard to pick one place! I'd say one of the spots you don't want to miss out on is Merida in Yucatán. The architecture, culture and food are amazing.

What is something you do to practice self-care?

I love this question! I've healed (and am still healing) a lot of mental health struggles in my life and I can't emphasize enough the importance of self-care. A very concrete thing I do to take care of myself is go for at least one walk every single day; by myself with no headphones or distractions. This helps with calming nerves, getting some vitamin D exposure, and letting my thoughts settle down.

A more abstract, but super important, self-care concept I've been working a lot on for the past year is setting boundaries like a chingona!

With friends, family and even myself I find that setting and maintaining healthy boundaries is one of the best acts of self-love you can do. It's not easy but I suggest starting small and practicing different ways of saying "no."

Stephanie is sharing so much valuable information on her social media and on her work, she is an important part of breaking generational trauma and diving deep into the mental health issues that trouble us as Latinas. We would loooove to hear more from her, wouldn't you?

Thank you Stephanie for talking to us and sharing your story. You're an important part of being the change we want to see in the world. #chingonaandproud
